Uplift Dietitians
New Mexico’s current nutrition and dietetics practice act has not been updated in over 30 years. The current licensure law does not mention medical nutrition therapy (MNT) because it wasn’t a term used when the practice act became law. Our proposed updates to the practice act are based on the Academy’s model practice act that was first adopted in 2018.
The model practice act includes MNT and other definitions that our current practice act does not, such as defining our scope of practice. Strengthening our practice act will help protect consumers from potentially harmful services provided by unqualified individuals.
Please join us to advocate for the Nutrition and Dietetics Practice Act bill that will be introduced in the 2023 legislative session. To find out how you can get involved, please see posts found in the “Advocacy and Policy” tab or click here . We must communicate with our Legislators regarding the importance of updating our licensure law to promote health for all New Mexicans.
